The orange circles on the map above represent the 1,165 nursing homes in the U.S. with more than ten resident complaints and patient care deficiencies from January 2008 to December of 2009.
Circles are sized by the number of deficiencies that the nursing home was reported to have in CMS data. In other words, the larger the spot on the map a nursing home facility has, the more deficiencies inspectors found.
The data was also checked against the numbers of patient complaints and the ratings systems given by the Nursing Home Compare database.
Data is from HealthData.gov and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
